Xayaboury North Bus Station

Xayaboury North Bus Station, also known as Thana Bus Station, is one of two bus stations near Xayaboury town.

Xayaboury Bus Station is the best bus station to use for departures to Muang Ngern (border with Thailand), Luang Prabang and for travel to Xiengkhouang Province (Plain of Jars).

Xayaboury North Bus Station is a small bus station with small number of long distance bus and minivan services and a larger number of shared taxi and minivan services to closer destinations.

Xayaboury North Bus Station is an out of town bus station with few facilities nearby. If you get stuck here because you arrive in the afternoon and you need to wait until the next morning to continue your onward journey then take local transport to the area around Xayaboury Market where you can find some guesthouses, shops and restaurants grouped around the market that will satisfy your basic needs until you get another bus to where it is you want to go.

Local Travel from Xayaboury North Bus Station


There are shared taxis waiting at Xayaboury North Bus Station which are available for private hire. If you hire one of these taxis privately expect the driver to try to charge you 40,000 Lao Kip for the less than 3 km journey into Xayaboury town. This price can normally be bargained down to 30,000 Lao Kip. When we last visited we were also offered a private car to Luang Prabang for 800,000 Lao Kip as the last bus had left about an hours before we arrived.

Facilities at the Bus Station


Xayaboury North Bus Station has no facilities whatsoever, not even a toilet, other than some seats in the waiting area.

On the southern side of the car park around the bus station there is a small restaurant with some staff who speak very good English. They sell reasonably priced drinks, including coffee, and local style food. They also have a toilet which you can use for the customary 2,000 Lao Kip fee that people generally charge in Laos to use their toilet.

Buy Tickets at the Bus Station


Tickets from travel from Xayaboury North Bus Station need to be purchased from ticket window in the station. The price of the ticket is normally written on the glass of the ticket window and should always be checked to compare with what you are asked to pay.

The ticket office at Xayaboury North Bus Station does not sell tickets in advance for the next day. The way it work is that you need to turn up 1 hour to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time and buy your ticket then. Tickets rarely sell out and bus and minivans will sit people on plastic chairs in the aisles in the unlikely event that a particular bus or minivan is full.

Bus to Luang Prabang


There is are two daily departures to Luang Prabang from Xaraboury North Bus Station.

  • Departures:
    • Minivan: 09:00 & 14:00 (60,000 Lao Kip)

Bus To Muang Ngeun (Thai Border)


There is a single daily minivan service from Xaraboury North Bus Station to Muang Ngeun, near the Huai Kon border crossing into Thailand. 

  • Departures:
    • Minivan: 10:00 (90,000 Lao Kip)

Bus to Xienkhouang (Plain of Jars)


There is a single daily departure from Xaraboury North Bus Station to Xiengkhouang Province (terminating at Phonsavan Northern Bus Station).

  • Departures:
    • Minivan: 09:00 (130,000 Lao Kip)
