About Travel to Siem Reap

Siem Reap is Cambodia’s second largest city, with a population of around 250,000. The city’s large size is primarily a consequence of it being very close to Cambodia’s main tourist attraction, the Angkor Archaeological Park. The archaeological park attracts around 1 million international visitors a year and much of the economic activity in Siem Reap relates to providing accommodation, food, and services to these visitors, as well as domestic tourists.

Accommodation in Siem Reap

Siem Reap has over 500 hotels, guesthouses, and dormitories. In terms of accommodation Siem Reap is slightly more expensive than less popular destinations in Cambodia, such as Battambang or Kampot, although there are still budget options available in the city. The cheapest accommodation in Siem Reap is in shared dormitory rooms, which charge from $6 USD a night. There are also lots of small hotels and guesthouses right in the centre of the city near pub street, such as The Funky Village, which charge from $10 to $20 USD a night for a small private room.

With the exception of the excellent Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, Siem Reap’s better quality hotels are located outside the city centre. For hotels with facilities such as a swimming pool, a good onsite restaurant, and well appointed rooms, expect to pay $80 to $100 USD a night. Heritages hotels, such as the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, charge up to $300 a night for a standard room.

Angkor Archaeological Park

The main entrance to Angkor Archaeological Park, which is where you buy your entrance tickets, is located about 6 km by road to the north of Siem Reap. Visitors need to arrange their own transport, or join a tour, to reach entrance to the park and they also need to arrange transport around the park which covers an area over 400 square kilometres contains over 1,000 temples and monuments.

For first time visitors, particularly those planning on a single visit, we recommend taking one of the two most commonly followed travel itineraries around the park which are known locally as the ‘Big Circuit’ and the ‘Little Circuit’.

Other Attractions near Siem Reap

The Angkor Archaeological Park is the most famous tourist attraction near Siem Reap, however, it’s not the only place of interest to visit in the area. Other local attractions include:

• Kampong Phluk Floating Village: One of the most popular day trips from Siem Reap is to visit Kampong Phluk Floating Village. Kampong Phluk Floating Village is a collection of three small villages built on stilts in the Tanas River close to the point where the river meets Tonle Sap Lake. Visitors can either take an organised tour from Siem Reap or travel 31 km by taxi to a boat pier where a tour can be organised on arrival.
• Phnom Kulen: Phnom Kulen is a 487 metre tall hill located around 1 hour by taxi to the north of Siem Reap. The hill is an important historical site. It’s where King Jayavarman II declared independence from the Cham Empire. The hill has a waterfall that’s popular with locals, a sandstone river bed with over 1,000 carvings, and several temples.
• Lotus Silk Farm: Located just over 10 km by road to the south of Siem Reap, Lotus Silk Farm is a commercially operated farm that provides guided tours and workshop demonstrating the production of a silk like fabric from the stems of aquatic lotus. The farm charges for tours and workshops. The basic boat and land tour costs around $15 USD for adults and $10 USD for children.
