About Travel to Pakse

Pakse is the main city in Champasak, which is the southern most province of Laos bordering both Thailand and Cambodia. Pakse is not a tourist destination in its own right in the same way as Vientiane or Luang Prabang, but it is the main transport hub for the far south of Laos and has by far the greatest range of facilities and amenities in the area.

Pakse City

Estimates of the size of Pakse’s population vary. The 2015 census puts the number of inhabitants at just under 80,000. Other more recent estimates suggest 120,000 people now live in the city. Either way, Pakse is the third largest city in Laos after the capital, Vientiane, and Savannakhet. It’s city with plenty of shops and restaurants, and a fairly large number of hotels and guesthouses.

There are several different parts of the city which are popular with leisure travellers, although the largest concentration of restaurants and hotels catering to tourists is on the main road (Road 13) which runs east to west through the city. Pakse has a wide range of hotels and restaurants to suit all budgets, as well as a small number of bars and nightclubs.

As well as the Thai and Lao dishes you will find in many parts of the country, Pakse also offers some international cuisine such as pizza, burgers, French style bakery products, and an Indian Restaurant in the north of the city. For alcoholic drinks we recommend the rooftop bar at Pakse Hotel & Restaurant for it’s panoramic city and river views.

Bolaven Plateau

The major tourist attraction in the area is the Bolaven Plateau, which is a highland area 1,000 to 1,350 above sea level. The highlights of the Bolaven Plateau are its many waterfalls, particularly Tad Yuang Waterfall, Tad Lo Waterfall, and Tad Pha Suam Waterfall.

There are several different ways to explore the Bolaven Plateau, the most adventurous of which is to rent a motorbike to tour around the area. There are two routes for motorcyclists to take around the plateau. The ‘Big Loop’ is over 300 km long and takes 2 to 3 days to complete. The ‘Small Loop’ is 150 km long and takes about half the time to travel. Visitors doing the Big Loop normally stay overnight at one of the guesthouses in Tad Lo.

Vat Phou

44 km by road to the south of Pakse is an extraordinary Khmer temple called Vat Phou. Two things in particular make this temple very special:

• Firstly, it’s very old. Construction of the temple began in the 2nd Century which makes it nearly 1,000 years older than the more famous Khmer temples such as Angkor Wat.
• The second interesting thing about Vat Phou is that it is located in Laos, not Cambodia. In terms of size and historical importance Vat Phou is often described as being the best Khmer temple outside of Cambodia.

Travel to the 4,000 Islands

Many foreign visitors who come back to Pakse are on route from Thailand to Don Det in the 4,000 Islands area. By bus it takes about 6 hours to travel from Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand to Pakse. From Pakse it then takes another 3 to 4 hours to travel by bus to Don Det.
