Arrival at Nuoc Ngam Bus Station

Nuoc Ngam Bus Station is located in the south of the city, 8 km by road from the popular Hoan Kiem District, and 12 km from Tay Ho District, where several of the city’s best hotels are located at the edge of West Lake. It’s much too far to walk from Nuoc Ngam Bus Station to any of the areas in Hanoi which are popular with leisure visitors.

For the journey by taxi from Nuoc Ngam Bus Station to Hoan Kiem District we advise that you should aim to pay around 200,000 VND (around $7 USD). The exact price needs to be negotiated with the driver, and be wary of using the meter to calculate the correct fare in Hanoi as taxi meter scams are very common. The journey should take around 10 minutes although this can vary greatly depending on the time of day or traffic. Hanoi taxi drivers tend to be more willing to use their meters when the traffic is bad because the resulting fares end up being higher than average.

Hoan Kiem District

Hoan Kiem District, often referred to as ‘The Old Quarter’ is the most popular place in Hanoi for leisure travellers to stay overnight, particularly foreign visitors. The area’s appeal stems from the interesting architecture and history of the area. As a consequence of the steady stream of visitors Hoan Kiem also has a very developed tourist infrastructure. English is widely spoken and menus tend to come in several different languages.

For a room with a balcony in a 3 star standard hotel expect to pay around $60 a night. For a standard room in Hoan District’s top hotel, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, expect around $250 USD a night.

Visitor Attractions in the Old Quarter

The most attractive and charming features of Hoan Kiem District are its narrow lively streets and heritage architecture. The Old Quarter is one of the few places in Vietnam (alongside the Old Quarter in Hoi An and Bach Dang Street in Hue) where you can see long rows of intact old buildings. In Hoan Kiem many of these buildings date back to the French colonial era and feature European style design features.
