About Travel to Don Det

Don Det is the third largest of several hundred river islands in the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) area in Southern Laos. The Si Phan Don area is a unique environment and an area of considerable natural beauty. Don Det, however, is also well known as a place where younger travellers to come to enjoy the nightlife.

Don Det Village

The Don Det has one small village at the very northern end of the island where the ferry pier is located. The village is where most of the younger visitors to the island tend to stay. There are plenty of guesthouses with river views, late night bars, and restaurants serving cuisine from all around the world. To some extent Don Det has the same atmosphere as Vang Vieng used to before authorities clamped down on dangerous activities in the water and the use of illegal drugs.

We recommend being very careful around getting involved with illegal drugs in Don Det. The same people who sell the drugs have also been known to inform the police about their customers in order to claim a share of any fine or bribe which the police demand in return for that foreign customer not being sent to prison in Laos.

Sightseeing from Don Det

There are several different sightseeing tours you can do from Don Det, some more expensive than others:

• Bicycle Tour: The least expensive sightseeing activity you can do on Don Det is to rent a bicycle and set out without a guide. There is a 7.2 km long trail around the coastline of Don Det that is easy to cycle around. You can also cross over a bridge connecting Don Det to the neighbouring island of Don Khone. Don Khone has two waterfalls, the best one is Tat Somphamit Falls, which are accessible by bicycle.
• Khone Phapheng Falls: Khone Phapheng Falls are often described as being the widest waterfall in the world, and the waters around these falls are also home to the world’s largest freshwater fish, the Mekong Catfish. To reach Khone Phapheng Falls from Don Det you need to take the river ferry to Nakasong, and then a tuk-tuk 11 km south to the entrance to the visitor centre by the falls.
• Boat Tours: By far the best way, and also the most expensive way, to appreciate the Si Phan Don area is to take a boat tour. Tour prices vary according to the itinerary and the number of customers in the boat. There are plenty of small islands to see and depending on your luck you may catch sight of the rare Irrawady River Dolphin which lives in this part of the Mekong River.
