Travel from Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal

The first task visitors to Bangkok need to tackle when they arrive in the city is how to travel from the airport or station to their accommodation. In Bangkok all the major train and bus stations, as well as the two major airports, are all some distance away from the areas where most leisure visitors would want to stay.

From Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal there are several different types of public transport you can take:

• Taxi: Meter taxis in Bangkok are very good value, however, more often than not taxi drivers at the Northern Bus Terminal refuse to use their meters, instead demanding fixed fares three to five times the amount that the same journey would cost on the meter. Unless you are travelling late at night, or have little idea of how to get to your destination using public transport, we recommend not using private taxis for travel from this bus terminal.
• MRT: The closest MRT (Metro) station to Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal is Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station. Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station is 1.9 km by road from the bus station. Walking between the 2 stations will take around 30 minutes. Alternatively, take a motorbike taxi for the fixed cost of 60 THB. The metro system connects to many destinations in Bangkok, including the Sukhumvit and Silom Roads, as well as connecting with other public transport networks such as the BTS and the Airport Link.
• BTS: The BTS is an elevated light railway system with stations in most parts of central Bangkok. The closest BTS station to Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal is Mo Chit BTS Station, which is a 2.1 km walk if you cut through Chatuchak Park along the northern edge of Chatuchak Weekend Market. By motorbike taxi the journey costs a fixed price of 60 THB.
• Chao Phraya Express Boat: The Chao Phraya Express Boat is a commuter ferry service, with piers close to the Khao San Road and the Grand Palace, amongst other places. Passengers can connect with the Chao Phraya Express Boat service at Bang Pho MRT Station, which is the third stop after commencing the journey at Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station.

Popular Parts of Bangkok

There are lots of parts of Bangkok with hotels and other amenities. Most leisure travellers  to Bangkok, however, stay in the following areas of the city:

• Talat Yot: This is the area around the Khao San Road. It’s popular with younger travellers and a good place to find inexpensive accommodation and food, as well as nightlife.
• Lower Sukhumvit Road: This part of the city is more expensive, and features lots of upmarket hotels and restaurants. Soi 4 and Soi 22 also feature adult entertainment zones.
• Silom Road: This is the financial district of Bangkok. There are lots of mid-range hotels in this area and some of Bangkok’s best restaurants. The popular Patong Night Market is located in this part of the city.
• China Town: Located to the west and north of Hua Lamphong Railway Station, this area is very interesting. It has many temples, markets, and places to eat traditional foods. The hotel rooms here tend to be quite small.
• Siam Square: This is main shopping area in Bangkok, with several very large modern malls clustered around Siam Square. The hotels here tend to be some of most expensive in Bangkok, although food is sold fairly cheaply at food courts and branded restaurants within the shopping malls.
