About Travel to Nakhon Phanom

Nakhon Phanom is a small but busy town with around 28,000 permanent residents located on the left bank of the Mekong River. Not so many foreign visitors come to Nakhon Phanom, but the town does attract plenty of Thai tourists and visitors from Vietnam who arrive on coach tours. The riverside views in Nakhon Phanom are beautiful and in a nearby town is one of Thailand’s most famous temples.

Staying Overnight in Nakhon Phanom

The better hotels in Nakhon Phanom are the large hotels located right on the river to the north and the south of the town centre. To the south Fortune View Khong Hotel and Fortune River View Nakhon Phanom offer very pleasant river view rooms for around 1,300 to 1,500 THB a night. The Landmark Hotel, which is in the centre of the town, doesn’t offer river view rooms but represents very good value for money at around 1,000 THB a night.

Like many small towns in Thailand, it can be difficult to find restaurants which are open in the evening in Nakhon Phanom. Many visitors will eat in their hotels in the evening or from the small food stalls in the centre of the town. One exception to this is the riverside Ban Nam Phon Restaurant, which serves Vietnamese food and stays open until until 23:00.

Places to Visit in Nakhon Phanom

The main attraction in Nakhon Phanom Town is the riverside area. Right in the centre of the town on the river front is a newly built monument to the mythical Naga, which according to local legend lives in the Mekong River. From the monument heading north there is a 12 km long cycling route which goes past many of the town’s historic buildings, including the Cathedral of St Anne and the Former Governor’s Residence Museum, and ends at the bridge across the river to Laos.

Wat Phra That Phanom

The most visited tourist attraction in Nakhon Phanom Province is Wat Phra That Phanom, Wat Phra That Phanom isn’t in Nakhon Phanom, it’s located 58.3 km by road to the south in a smaller town, That Phanom. Travelling to Wat Phra That Phanom from Nakhon Phanom is very easy and very cheap. There are frequent shared taxi services from the centre of Nakhon Phnom right to Wat Phra That Phanom.

Wat Phra That Phanom is classed as one of the 6 most important temples in Thailand. The main feature of the temple is its 57 metre tall Lao style chedi tower. According to legend an important religious relic is encased within the chedi, Visiting the temple on 7 occasions is believed by some Thai Buddhists to make a person prosperous.

The temple complex is fairly large, and there are lots of other points of interest to see. Also, large numbers of Thai people visit this temple and it’s a fascinating cultural experience for foreign visitors.
