About Travel to Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam and the country’s most popular tourist destination. Hanoi has a very long history and lots of interesting historical sites to visit. Hanoi is also a major transport hub for destinations across the northern part of Vietnam to popular destinations such as Sapa and Halong Bay. Hanoi is also at the very top end of Vietnam’s famous Reunification Line which runs south 1,726 km all the way to Ho Chi Minh City.

Hanoi Old Quarter

Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a district in the north east of the city with narrow streets and terraced houses and shops built largely during the period when this part of Vietnam was administered by France. The Old Quarter is the most popular part of the city for tourists and one of the most picturesque. The area has lots of hotels and restaurants catering to leisure visitors, and is lively in the evenings. The downside of staying in the Old Quarter, however, is that at certain times of the year it can become very crowded.

There are three main tourist attractions in Hanoi’s Quarter:

• Hoan Kiem Lake: Probably Hanoi’s most famous tourist attraction, this small city centre lake has two islands, one with a temple and another with a commemorative tower. There are many important local legends associated with the lake.
• Bach Ma Temple: The Bach Ma Temple is a very old temple, most likely built in either the 9th or 10th Century. The temple is dedicated to gods and legends of ancient Vietnamese folk religions.
• St Joseph’s Cathedral: Constructed in 1886 as a Catholic place of worship, St Joseph’s Cathedral is believed to be the oldest christian church in Hanoi.

Ba Dinh Square

Located 3 km walking distance from the Old Quarter, Ba Dinh Square is the location of several of Hanoi’s most important buildings including:

• The One Pillar Pagoda: Built in 1049, the One Pillar Pagoda is one of Vietnam’s most important shrines. The shrine was built by Emperor Lý Thái Tông, founder of Hanoi, following a dream in which a Buddhist deity appeared to him.
• Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: The mausoleum is an iconic building, reminiscent of a Greek temple, guarded 24 hours a day by Vietnamese soldiers in ceremonial white uniforms.
• Presidential Palace: Completed in 1906, the Presidential Palace was initially the residence of the Governor-General of Indochina and later used by the new government of North Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh lived in a small wooden hut in the grounds of the palace.
