About Travel to Da Nang

Da Nang is an increasingly popular coastal destination which, as well as having one of the best beaches in Vietnam, has a wide range of interesting cultural attractions for visitors. With a population of over 1 million permanent residents and lots of tourists visiting, Da Nang is also a lively city with a holiday atmosphere.

My Khe Beach

As a tourist destination, the focal point of Da Nang is its 30 km long beach which stretches south from the Son Tra Peninsula almost all the way to Hoi An. My Khe Beach is located on the eastern side of the city, about 5 km by road from the city centre where Da Nang Railway Station is located and just over 6 km from Da Nang International Airport. From the Han River, which divides Da Nang into eastern and western parts, it’s a 1.7 km long walk to My Khe.

The busiest part of My Khe Beach is a section known as Bai Bien Beach, which is located roughly 5 km walking distance to the south of the Son Tra Peninsula. The area behind Bai Bien Beach is the city’s main tourist area with the highest concentration of tourist hotels, as well as bars and restaurants. This is the part of the city most foreign and domestic leisure travellers choose to stay.

Hotels in Da Nang

Tourism is a major part of Da Nang’s economy, although not to the same extent as Nha Trang, and this is reflected in the relatively large number (over 800) of tourist hotels, guesthouses, and hostels in the city. As well as having lots of different places to choose from, Da Nang’s hotels are great value for money particularly when compared to room rates in coastal destinations in nearby Thailand. One thing for foreign visitors to Da Nang to bear in mind, however, is that the focus of the city’s tourism industry is domestic tourism and not so many of the hotels in Da Nang specifically cater for foreign visitors.

The cheapest tourist accommodation in Da Nang is in shared dormitory rooms in hostels, which start from as little as $4 USD a night. Staying in hostels is only slightly cheaper than staying in a private room in a guesthouse. However, some hostels have prime locations and offer facilities that cheaper guesthouses don’t, as well as the opportunity to meet other travellers. The city’s most expensive hotels are the large branded resorts on My Khe Beach, such as Danang Marriott Resort & Spa, which charge around $300 USD a night in peak periods.

Museums and Art Galleries

Da Nang has several government operated museums and art galleries which are well worth visiting. The most popular of which are Danang Fine Arts Museum and the Museum of Cham Sculpture.

The Museum of Cham Sculpture houses the world’s largest collection of Cham era artwork. The Cham ruled over Southern Vietnam from the 2nd to 15th Centuries. They are believed to have originated from islands such as Java and held an eclectic range of religious beliefs, combining Hinduism, Buddhism, and local beliefs, and this is reflected in the unusual and elaborate sculptures they created. Over 1,000 pieces of Cham artwork are on display at this museum as well as interesting displays about both the discovery of the artefacts and the history of the museum itself.

Danang Fine Arts Museum is located in the city centre near Da Nang Railway Station. The museum has lockers to temporarily store luggage allowing visitors to browse 3 floors of interesting and unique Vietnamese artwork whilst waiting for the departure of their train. The entrance fee is very little and the facilities, including the air-conditioning system and the toilets, are excellent.

Historical Attractions

The major historical attractions in the area aren’t in Da Nang itself. The most famous of these is Hoi An Old Town, which is located about 30 km by road to the south of Da Nang. Hoi An Old Town is a small area featuring traditional houses and a wooden Japanese style bridge dating back to a period in the 17th Century when Hoi An was one of Vietnam’s main trading ports. Hoi An is a major tourist attraction, and it gets very busy, but there are also numerous points of interest for visitors that make it worthwhile to visit.

A second much less visited historical attraction is the My Son Sanctuary, located 45 km to the south east of Da Nang. Built over a 1,000 year period from the 4th to 14th Centuries, the My Son Sanctuary was one of the main religious centres of the Cham civilisation.
