About Travel to Pakse

Pakse is the major city in the south of Laos, and the third largest city in the country. Pakse City has a pleasant location near where the Xo Don River meets the Mekong River. It’s also an important transit point for travel to Thailand, as well as to the 4,000 Islands area, and beyond that the main crossing point between Laos and northern Cambodia.

Facilities for Visitors in Pakse City

By Laotian standards Pakse is a large city. The population is somewhere between 85,000 and 120,000 depending upon which estimate you refer to. The city doesn’t receive large numbers of tourists, particularly foreign tourists, to the same extent as Vientiane or Luang Prabang, but nonetheless enough people go there to sustain a range of tourist hotels and eateries.

• Hotels in Pakse: The city has around 30 tourist hotels, hostels, and guesthouses. The city’s best known, and arguably most luxurious, hotel is the Champa Palace Hotel which charges around the equivalent of $60 USD per night. The cheapest accommodation is in hostels such as the Vie Hostel Pakse which charge around $7 USD a night.
• Restaurants in Pakse: Most of the restaurants and cafes in Pakse serve local cuisine. The city does, however, have a small ‘tourist zone’ located on Road 13 with restaurants serving other types of food including French and Indian dishes, as well as pizza and hamburgers. For French cuisine try Dok Mai Lao Caffe Restaurant, and for Indian food visit Amin Restaurant.

Places to Visit

There are no major tourist attractions in Pakse City. The city’s 2 minor tourist attractions are its colourful food market (Dao Hueng Market) and its ornate main temple which is located on the riverside (Wat Luang). There are though 2 major tourist attractions close to Pakse City which you could visit on day trips from Pakse City:

• Vat Phou: Vat Phou is an ancient Cambodian temple located about 44 km by road to the south of Pakse City. Parts of Vat Phou were constructed in the 2nd Century, with significant additions made in the 7th Century, and then again in the 12th and 13th Centuries. The temple is 1.4 km long. Visitors enter at the western end near the base of a cliff and need to walk to eastern end of the temple to reach the main shrine.
• Bolaven Plateau: The Bolaven Plateau is a large highland area (1,000 to 1,350 metres above sea level), the western edge of which is located about 30 km by road to the east of Pakse City. The area is named after the indigenous group living in the area, the Laven. There is a lot to see on the Bolaven Plateau, including traditional Laven villages. However, the main attractions in the plateau are its many waterfalls, some of which are unusually shaped because of the area’s unique geographical features. The most popular waterfalls are Tad Yuang Waterfall, Tad Lo Waterfall, Ta Fane Waterfall, and Tad Pha Suam Waterfall.

Travel Connections from Pakse

From Pakse the two most popular onward travel destinations are Ubon Ratchathani to the west, and Don Det to the south.

• Ubon Ratchathani: From Pakse its a 44 km journey by road to the border crossing to Thailand at Chong Mek, and from there it’s about a further 100 km to reach Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand. Ubon Ratchathani is not a major tourist destination in its own right but it is a major transport hub for travel by bus, train, and by air to Bangkok. By public bus the journey from Pakse to Ubon Ratchathani takes around 3 to 4 hours depending upon which bus service you take.
• Don Det: Don Det is one of the larger Mekong River islands in the 4,000 Islands area. It’s a popular destination for younger travellers with a ‘party scene’ similar to the one which existed in Vang Vieng about 20 years ago. By bus it takes around 3 hours to travel from Pakse to Don Det, with the last part of the journey to the island by local river ferry.
