About Travel to Hue

Hue is a popular tourist destination located in Central Vietnam, about 90 km by road to the north of Da Nang and 650 km by road to the south of Hanoi. The city doesn’t have a beach, its 10 km inland, but it does have a series of interesting historical attractions that rank among the best in Vietnam.

Accommodation in Hue

Hotel booking websites list around 320 hotels, guesthouses, and resorts in Hue City. Considering the relatively small size of the city visitors have plenty of different hotels to choose from.

For one of the city’s larger and more luxurious hotels, such as the Indochine Palace or the Melia Vinpearl Hue, expect to pay from the equivalent of $70 to $80 USD a night. At the other end of the scale you could also choose to stay in a hostel for around $4 USD for a bed in a shared dormitory. Hue has lots of hostels which attract younger foreign visitors seeking both cheap accommodation and company. However, also bear in mind that for as little as $20 USD a night you could also stay in a private room in a very pleasant hotel, in a popular area, such as the Dragon Hotel Hue or Soleil House.

In terms of where to stay the most popular part of the city is a small almost square area located on the south side of the Perfume River, the outer edge of which is marked by 4 roads: Le Loi, Hung Vuong, Le Quy Don, and Nguyen Con Tru. The busiest part of this small ‘tourist zone’ is Pham Ngu Lao, which is a side street running south from Le Loi. As well as lots of tourist hotels, this area also has plenty of bars and restaurants which specialise in catering to foreign visitors.

Imperial Citadel

Hue’a major tourist attraction is its Imperial Citadel, which occupies a large part of the city centre. The main part of the citadel covers an area of 4 square kilometres bounded on all four sides by a 2 metre thick wall accessible via 6 gates. Within this area is an inner part of the citadel surrounded by another wall with 4 gates.

Construction of the citadel started in 1804 marking the start of the Nguyen dynasty, which ruled over Vietnam until 1945. During this period Hue was the capital city of Vietnam.

Hue’s Imperial Citadel suffered badly during the Vietnam War with around 150 of its 160 buildings being destroyed during the Battle of Hue in 1968. Reconstruction of the citadel has been ongoing since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and there’s now an impressive range of recreated and restored buildings to see.

The citadel is open every day from 08:00 to 17:30. The entrance fee for adults, both foreign and domestic, is 150,000 VND.

Other Visitor Attractions in Hue

There is a lot to see in Hue beyond the Imperial Citadel. Indeed, the city has so many interesting and historically important buildings that many don’t have any signage or appear in tourist guides. Lots of old buildings are waiting to be found by visitors exploring the area around the citadel where government officials and successful business people built their own grand residences.

The five other tourist attractions, besides the Imperial Citadel that we recommend you visit are:

• The Pagoda of the Celestial Lady: Located on the Perfume River, 4.2 km by road to the west of Hue Railway Station, the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady (also known as Thien Mu) is Hue’s second most famous landmark. The pagoda was constructed in 1601 and according to legend is dedicated to an old lady who advised the then Nguyen Lord where to build his new city. The pagoda is also associated with several other important legends and important events in more modern history.
• The Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh: Located 7.5 km by road to the south of Hue Railway Station, the Tomb of the Emperor Khai Dinh is arguably the most impressive of the series of royal tombs built the Nguyen Emperors. Khai Dinh’s Tomb, built between 1920 and 1935 at the massive expense of local tax payers, features a highly ornate crypt decorated with glass and metalwork imported from France. The concrete used to build this hillside tomb has turned black which, according to local beliefs, is thought to reflect the Emperor’s cruelty in the treatment of his subjects,
• Truong Tien Bridge: Located right in the centre of Hue. spanning the Perfume River, the Truong Tien Bridge is an engineering masterpiece designed by Gustave Eiffel using similar construction methods as the more famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. There are pedestrian walkways on either side of this 403 metres long bridge offering visitors excellent views along the Perfume River.
• Dong Ba Market: Dong Ba Market is the largest market in Hue. It’s located just to the east of the Imperial Citadel on the northern side of the Perfume River. Pretty much everything is sold at Dong Ma Market from food through to home ware. The range of ingredients and cooked food available to buy is extensive and a real showcase of what people eat in Central Vietnam. Anthony Bourdain visited and filmed in the market for his Parts Unknown television series.
• Bach Dang Street: Located on a canal which originally formed the eastern boundary of outer part of the Imperial Citadel, Bach Bang Street features lots of old and interesting buildings, many tucked down side streets and currently used as residences.
