About Travel to Da Nang

With over 1 million residents Da Nang is one of the larger cities in Central Vietnam and it’s also a popular tourist destination. The city has a relaxed atmosphere and a 30 km long beach (My Khe Beach) located to the east of the city centre which is good for swimming and sunbathing.

Staying in Da Nang

Da Nang has great facilities for both domestic and foreign holiday makers. Visitors have over 800 hotels and guesthouses to choose from located throughout the city. Most holidaymakers, however choose to stay to the east of the Han River in the area adjacent to My Khe Beach. This is the area with the greatest concentration of tourist accommodation, restaurants, and nightlife.

The accommodation available in the city ranges from around the equivalent of $4 USD a night for a bed in shared dormitory up to over $300 USD for one of the luxurious resorts located in My Khe Beach such as the Danang Marriott Resort & Spa. The best value for money in terms of accommodation tends to be in the mid-range hotels, such as the excellent Adela Boutique Hotel, where a luxurious room with a balcony and a partial sea view costs as little as $30 USD a night.

Similarly the range of food available in Da Nang is extensive, particularly in the tourist areas near My Khe Beach. Vietnamese food and ‘international cuisine’ are both widely available. In particular there are lots of Indian restaurants, such as Indian Restaurant Ganesh Da Nang, as well as some creative modern approaches to Vietnamese cuisine, such as the popular Umm Banh Mi & Cafe. Inexpensive Vietnamese food is also readily available with many basic local restaurants located close to the larger and more expensive tourist oriented restaurants.

Visitor Attractions in Da Nang

One of the reasons why Da Nang is popular as a tourist destination, besides its fantastic long beach, is that the city has lots of points of interest for visitors. Da Nang is more than simply a beach resort destination its also a cultural centre. Among the most popular of these cultural attractions are:

• Dragon Bridge: Completed in 2013, the Dragon Bridge is Da Nang’s most iconic feature. The bridge is 1 of 4 bridges in the city centre spanning the Han River. What’s special about the Dragon Bridge is that there is a sculpture of a dragon running the length of the bridge. The head of the dragon shoots out fire and water in a show that happens every Saturday and Sunday night at 21:00.
• Love Lock Bridge: Love Lock Bridge is located near the Dragon Bridge and it’s another popular place to take photographs.
• Han Market: Han Market is a city centre multipurpose indoor market. It’s great both for shopping, clothing is very good value, and also as a cultural experience.
• Danang Fine Arts Museum: Located close to Da Nang Railway Station, Danang Fine Arts Museum is an excellent public art gallery featuring a wide range of Vietnamese artwork, both modern and old. In total there are around 1,000 pieces of artwork displayed on three levels.
• Museum of Cham Sculpture: Da Nang’s Museum of Cham Sculpture houses the largest collection of Cham artwork anywhere in the world. The Cham Empire controlled large parts of Vietnam and neighbouring countries for a period from the 2nd to 15th Centuries and as a civilisation were notable for adopting religious beliefs that relate to several different religious traditions and the artwork reflects this.

Visitor Attractions near Da Nang

Whilst there is plenty to do and see in Da Nang City itself, arguably the most interesting visitor attractions in the area are located outside the city centre itself, these include:

• Ba Na Hills: Located 23 km from Da Nang, Ba Na Hills began as a holiday village built for French tourists in the early 20th Century. The original village looks similar to a small village in France. In addition to the French architecture there are also now several flower and vegetable gardens which thrive in the cooler hilltop climate, and a 150 metre long observation bridge called the The Golden Bridge.
• Hoi An: Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s top tourist attractions and its located 30 km by road to the south of the Da Nang. The older part of the city features narrow streets with very old traditional style houses and a Japanese style covered wooden bridge originally installed in the 17th Century. The canal side area in Hoi An is also very attractive particularly at night when the area and the canal is lit up with paper lanterns.
• My Son Sanctuary: Located 45 km to the south east of Da Nang, My Son Sanctuary is a dilapidated temple complex built over a 1,000 year period from the 4th to 14th Centuries. The site covers 1.42 square kilometres and contains several clusters of buildings.
• Marble Mountains: The Marble Mountains is an unusual religious centre located 11 km by road to the south of Da Nang, in the same direction as Hoi An. The Marble Mountains consist of a cluster of 5 hills, each believed to represent 1 of the 5 elements in ancient Chinese scientific belief. There are various shrines and temples scattered across the hills which local people have been visiting as places of worship for hundreds of years. The site has become a tourist attraction more recently.
