About Travel to Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is an unusual place which is very different, in many respects, to other destinations in Laos. Vang Vieng is, without doubt, a place of exceptional beauty. However, it’s also a place where lots of younger travellers from Europe, North America and Australia go to drink alcohol to excess and stay up late in the evening in noisy bars.

 Staying Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a long thin town with about 25,000 permanent residents stretched out along the right bank of the Namsong River.  The centre of the town, which is about 1 km wide and 300 metres, is very busy. Away from this central area it gets much quieter.

Vang Vieng has a wide range of different types of accommodation. Much of that accommodation is low quality with cheap room rates. These types of places are specifically aimed to appeal to younger independent travellers. Increasingly, however, better quality hotels are being developed primarily to cater to Asian tourists with higher expectations and budgets.

Vang Vieng does though have a really good range of restaurants. Many different types of international cuisine are available in Vang Vieng, and there are some better quality establishments in among the cheaper restaurants which focus on catering to young backpackers with low budgets.

Places to Visit in Vang Vieng Town

There’s not much of interest to see in Vang Vieng Town, besides the spectacular views along the river. Vang Vieng Town has a couple of small temples, such as Wat That, you can visit and a small range of shops but not much more than that.

One major attraction which you can walk to easily from Vang Vieng Town is Tham Chang Cave. Tham Chang Cave is located on the other side of Namsong River accessible by a sturdy suspension which you need to pay a small amount to cross over. It’s not a long walk to get there from the town centre although there are lots of steps you need to climb up and down to access the cave itself.

Tubing in Vang Vieng

The number 1 activity in Vang Vieng is floating down the Namsomg River in large rubber tubes stopping on route at bars. In order to participate in this activity most visitors will go on an organising tour, with tour operators renting the tubes to customers and driving them to an out of town starting point for their tubing adventure. Most hotels and guesthouses proactively offer these tubing tours to younger visitors.

Other Activities in Vang Vieng

After tubing and late night drinking, the next most popular activities are visiting the viewpoints, caves and natural pools located in the limestone hills on the other side of the Namsong River a few kilometres to the west Vang Vieng Town.

It’s too far to walk to most of these attractions, particularly the Nam Xay Viewpoint which is generally considered the most spectacular of the viewpoints, so you need to arrange transport. The transport options are:

• Joining an organised tour
• Renting a bicycle
• Renting a motorbike
• Renting a buggy
• Hiring a taxi or tuk-tuk

The cheapest option is renting a bicycle, which will cost the equivalent of $3 to $4 USD per day. The worst value option is renting a buggy, which will cost you about $10 USD an hour with the possibility of being asked to pay extra for even minor damage to the vehicle when you return it.
