Border Crossing to Thailand
Savannakhet is close to the bridge crossing over to Mukdahan in Thailand. This border crossing is a major driver of the local economy. Significant numbers of people and volume of goods pass through Savannakhet on the journey between Thailand and Laos. Thai and Chinese men also come to Savannakhet to gamble in the city’s large casino, the Savan Vegas and Casino, to take advantage of Laos’s more relaxed rules on gambling and lax enforcement of laws around prostitution and other illicit activities.
Bus services to Mukdahan in Thailand depart hourly from Savannakhet Bus Station and cost slightly over the equivalent of $1.5 USD or 50 THB per person. If you take a long time to complete the border control formalities entering into Thailand the bus will leave without you so take all your bags with you when you leave the bus to pass through border control.

The Consulate is located on the main road to the north of the city centre. Visa applications are accepted 08:30 to 11:00 Monday to Friday except for Thai and Lao National Holidays when the visa office is shut.
Staying in Savannakhet
Savannakhet’s tourist infrastructure is not as well developed as it is in Vientiane, Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang. The city doesn’t really get enough foreign visitors to support lots of business catering to foreign visitors.
You can, however, find some fairly comfortable accommodation in Savannakhet, along with restaurants that cater for foreign visitors with English language menus and international food.
Joli Guesthouse and Leena’s Guesthouse are popular budget options for foreign visitors. Slightly more expensive and better are the Hoongthip Hotel and the Sala Savan Guesthouse. If you have the money, however, the riverside Dao Savanh Resort & Spa is by far the best hotel in the city.
