About Travel to Da Nang

Located 450 km by road to the east if Pakse, Da Nang is the largest city in the Central Region of Vietnam and the sixth largest city in the country as a whole. Da Nang is also one of Vietnam’s top tourist destinations combining an excellent beach with a full range of amenities for visitors, and a series of interesting cultural and historical attractions.

About Da Nang City

Da Nang is a large city. Around 1 million people live in the city centre and a total of 3 million live in the wider metropolitan area. Tourism is only one of the industries in the city and certain parts of the city are more focused on tourism than others.

The main tourist area in Da Nang is the part of the city on the eastern side of the Han River, close to My Khe Beach. This is the part of the city with the highest concentration of tourist accommodation, and clusters of restaurants and bars catering to foreign visitors. The majority of the leisure travellers coming to Da Nang are Vietnamese tourists, however, enough foreign visitors stay in the eastern part of the city to sustain restaurants serving ‘international cuisine’ and western style bars.

Another part of the city that’s popular with leisure travellers is the city centre immediately to the east of the Han River, and the riverside area particularly the stretch between the Dragon Bridge and the Han River Bridge. This is the part of the city with historic buildings such as Da Nang Cathedral, a series of good museums and galleries, and several markets. There are also some very good restaurants in this area which are different to the more tourist oriented eateries in the eastern half of the city.

Accommodation in Da Nang

Da Nang receives around 15 million overnight visitors a year, and the city has plenty of tourist accommodation. Major hotel booking websites list over 800 hotels, hostels, and guesthouses catering to nearly all budgets. Room rates start from the equivalent of $4 USD a night for a bed in a shared dormitory room rising to over $300 USD a night for the city’s most exclusive hotel, the Danang Marriott Resort & Spa.

Overall accommodation is good for value in Da Nang. Hotels tend to be priced for the domestic tourism market, because Vietnamese tourists outnumber foreign visitors. There are plenty of 4 star standard independent hotels near the beach in Da Nang which cost around $30 USD a night, which is much cheaper than equivalent hotels in Thailand.

My Khe Beach in Da Nang
My Khe Beach in Da Nang
My Khe Beach

The main beach in Da Nang is My Khe Beach. It’s located on the eastern side of the city centre and stretches 30 km from the Son Tra Peninsula (to the north of the city) nearly all the way south to Hoi An. It’s also a good beach. The sand is white and kept clean, and there are safe swimming areas with lifeguards.

My Khe Beach is so long, as well as wide, it only ever gets busy in particular sections of the beach, and as you travel south from the city centre the beach becomes practically deserted except for a few local fishermen. The busiest part of the beach, sometimes referred to as ‘Bai Bien Beach’, is located about 5 km south from the Son Tra Peninsula. This 3 km section of beach is adjacent to the main tourist area and it tends to fill up with people from around 16:00 in the evening as the weather starts to become cooler. People come to swim, play games, and sit at the bars along the edge of this section of My Khe Beach.

Places to Visit in the City Centre

The centre of Da Nang City has lots of interesting places to visit. The main tourist attraction in the city is its riverside area. It’s a scenic spot and the city authorities have built a good pedestrian walkway along the side of the river, along with a 666 metre long bridge (the Dragon Bridge) which has a giant metal sculpture of a dragon spanning the entire length of the central reservation. Near the Dragon Bridge, there is a second shorter bridge (Love Lock Bridge) where people are encouraged to place padlocks symbolising the permanency of their relationships. It’s very popular with Asian tourists.

Less popular, but far more thought provoking, are Da Nang’s museums and art galleries. The most famous of these is the Museum of Cham Sculpture. The Museum of Cham Sculpture holds the best collection of Cham era artwork anywhere in the world. Over 1,000 items, mostly sculptures, are on display. A second museum which is particularly good is Danang Fine Arts Museum. Danang Fine Arts Museum is located near Da Nang Railway Station and has left luggage lockers so it’s an easy place to visit whilst waiting for a train.

Also of interest in the city centre are two indoor markets, Han Market and Con Market. Both sell a wide range of goods at very cheap prices. Han Market, in particular is a great place to go if you need to buy cheap t-shirts or trainers which might not last very long but will see you through the rest of your trip to Vietnam.

Places to Visit outside Da Nang City

The most popular tourist attraction in the area isn’t in Da Nang, it’s in Hoi An which is 30 km by road to the south. The old part of Hoi An, which is often referred to as Hoi An Ancient Town or Old Town, was an important port during two periods in Vietnam’s history, one from the 7th to 10 Centuries and the other from the 16th to 18th Centuries. A cluster of residential and commercial buildings from that second period, along with a wooden Japanese style bridge, have survived intact and are now open as museums. The Ancient Town is a small area but it’s very unique.

The second most tourist attraction outside the city centre is Ba Na Hills. Ba Na Hills started a holiday resort constructed at altitude in the early 20th Century as a cool weather retreat for European residents and visitors. What was built looks very similar to a small town in rural France. Since then Ba Na Hills has been developed into a theme park, accessible by cable car, called Sun World Ba Na Hills. The French style buildings remain, with other attractions added to the village. These include some fantastic gardens and a much photographed observation bridge called the Golden Bridge. There are also restaurants and hotels located inside the theme park.
