About Travel to Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is one of South East Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, having received approximately 900,000 leisure visitors in the first 3 months of 2025, around half of whom were foreign travellers. The popularity of Vang Vieng is massive in proportion to its small size (around 25,000 people live in Vang Vieng) and its very basic infrastructure.

Stunning Scenery

Once little more than a stop over town on what used to be a very long journey between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, the main reason for Vang Vieng’s growth as a tourist destination is the stunning scenery around Vang Vieng. The town is pleasantly located on the banks of the Nam Song bordered on both sides by steep jaggedly shaped limestone hills riddled with caves.

Vang Vieng also became a well known party destination from around the late 1990s, with the number 1 activity being floating down the river in a rubber tube stopping at bars along the way. The Laotian authorities have now imposed regulations which have stopped a lot of the ‘party activities’, nonetheless, the party scene (or the perception of the town having a party scene) is another reason for Vang Vieng’s popularity.

In terms of things to see and do in Vang Vieng Town there is very little until, that is, evening time when the bars and restaurants can become very lively late into the evening. There are a small number of temples to visit in the town, such as Wat That, and Tham Chang Cave which is just on the edge of Vang Vieng Town. Other than that transport is required to visit the main points of interest near Vang Vieng.

Hotels in Vang Vieng

The hotel scene in Vang Vieng has changed quite dramatically over the last 10 years. One of the changes is the increased number of hotels, resorts, and guesthouses in the town which has grown to over 130.

The other big change is in the type of accommodation available and the price. Rooms for $10 USD or less are still in plentiful supply, however, the majority of the accommodation is now in the $20 to $50 USD per night range with facilities such as swimming pools widely available. There are also a few more high end resorts and hotels with good views, such as Phubarn VimarnVangvieng Resort, which charge in excess of $100 USD per night.

Visitor Attractions near Vang Vieng

The main visitor attractions near Vang Vieng are located in the hills on the other side of Nam Song River from the town. It’s a 10 to 15 km journey to reach these points of interest so visitors either need to join a tour or rent a motorbike ($7 to 8 USD a day) or at least a mountain bike ($3 to 4 USD a day).

There’s also a small charge of 10,000 Lao Kip to visit most of these attractions.
