Hanoi is the largest city in the northern part of Vietnam, with an estimated 9 million permanent residents. Hanoi is also the most popular visitor destination in Vietnam, in part because it’s an important transport hub for travel to other popular destinations in the north of Vietnam.

Touring Vietnam

Hanoi is a great starting point for a tour of Vietnam. From Hanoi visitors can travel inexpensively by bus to the main tourist attractions in Northern Vietnam, such as Ha Long Bay, Sapa, and Ha Giang. After visiting the north of the country visitors can travel south by train on Vietnam’s famous Reunification Line which runs 1,726 km south passing through major destinations such as Ninh Binh, Hue, Da Nang and Nha Trang before terminating in Ho Chi Minh City.

Staying in Hanoi

The most popular part of the city for leisure visitors, particularly foreign tourists, is Hoan Kiem District, which is also known as the ‘Old Quarter’. The Old Quarter has over 700 tourist hotels and guesthouses, and many more restaurants, cafes, and bars. Expect to pay around the equivalent of around $10 USD for the most basic room with a shared bathroom. Around $25 USD pays for a small 3 star quality room with a private bathroom. Expect to pay at least $60 USD for a larger room with a balcony in the Old Quarter.

One downside of staying in the Old Quarter is that it gets very busy during the tourist season. Many foreigners staying long term in Hanoi choose not to base themselves in the Old Quarter for that reason. A popular alternative to booking a hotel in the Old Quarter is to stay in Tay Ho District to the north of the Old Quarter. This district encompasses West Lake and has lots of hotels overlooking the lake, including the city’s top hotels such as the Sheraton Hanoi Hotel and the InterContinental Hanoi Westlake.

Visitor Attractions in Hanoi

Hanoi is a large city spread out over 3,359.84 square kilometres and there are plenty of things to see and do. The most famous of the city’s tourist attractions, however, are located in 4 specific districts of the city: Hoan Kiem District, Tay Ho District, Ba Dinh District, and Dong Da District.

It is possible to explore the major tourist attractions in all these four districts of the city by walking from the Old Quarter, but most visitors choose not to because of the heat. An easier option is to take a taxi to each area and then continue on foot to visit points of interest which are clustered together, and later taking another taxi either back to your accommodation or the next cluster of visitor attractions.
