About Travel to Luang Namtha

Luang Namtha is a fairly large town by Laos standards, with a population of over 50,000, which is located in a remote part of the country close to the border with China. Leisure travellers tend to come to Luang Namtha for two main reasons: to go trekking or to travel overland into China.

Luang Namtha Town

Luang Namtha has fewer facilities for tourists than many other tourist destinations in Laos, including Huay Xai. The town’s tourist accommodation is largely located in the New Town a few kilometres to the north of the bus station overlooking the Nam Tha River. The range of restaurants in the town is very basic and many visitors either eat at their guesthouse or go to the town’s night market.

In terms of things to do in Luang Namtha Town the options are also limited. The town’s two temples, Luang Namtha Stupa and Poum Pouk Stupa, are worth visiting. The town’s day time market, Muang Sing Market, is interesting because many of the vendors come from the ethnic minority groups who live in remote villages in the surrounding countryside.

Nam Ha National Protected Area

There are a few different areas in Luang Namtha Province where you can go trekking and canoeing, but the most popular is the Nam Ha National Protected Area. The Nam Ha National Protected Area is a 2,234 square kilometre national park where people from various ethnic groups, including the Tai Dam and Akha, still live in isolated settlements within dense forested mountainous areas.

To visit the Nam Ha National Protected Area you need transport to get you there, an entrance permit, and a guide. It’s not somewhere where solo trekking is really possible. There are, however, close to a dozen different companies with offices based in Luang Namtha Town who can organise trekking trips. The trips get cheaper the more people you have trekking with you as the cost of the guides is shared between more people.

The most popular, and generally most expensive, company to go trekking with is Green Discovery Laos. They offer three treks in the Nam Ha Protected Area. The prices below are from 2024 and are based on 2 people going trekking as a group:

There is no modern accommodation in the Nam Ha National Protected Area. Depending upon which trek you do, you will either be staying in a small bungalow in a village, in a tent, or a shelter made from large leaves.
