About Travel to Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a small town with around 25,000 permanent residents that attracts a disproportionately large number of foreign and domestic tourists estimated to have reached 700,000 in 2023.

Vang Vieng Town

Vang Vieng is a tourist town located in an area of immense natural beauty. The town itself may not appeal to all visitors, but the location on the banks of the Nam Song River with a backdrop of steep sided hills riddled with caves is magical.

Vang Vieng is similar in many ways to other destinations where younger travellers congregate in large numbers to drink alcohol and engage in activities such as floating down the river in tubes and in the evening watching TV in large bars. It’s similar to the atmosphere of backpacker destinations two decades ago except that this generation of young adventurers tends to have more money to spend on shorter trips.

One way, however, that Vang Vieng is different to destinations popular with younger travellers, such as Tonsai Village in Koh Phi Phi (Thailand), is that the composition of the visitors is changing fast in Vang Vieng. The town receives an increasing numbers Asian visitors attracted to the idea of visiting a ‘party town’ but not really participating in that party and demanding a better standard of food and accommodation.

Beyond Vang Vieng Town

To really make the most of a visit to Vang Vieng you need transportation. A very number of the local attractions, such as the Tham Chang Cave, are within easy walking distance of Vang Vieng Town. Renting a motorbike costs in region of the equivalent of $7 to 8 USD a day, and a mountain bike around $3 to 4 USD a day. Small off-road buggies, popular with Asian tourists, cost $10 USD or more an hour to rent.

A popular excursion for visitors to Vang Vieng is to cross over the Namsong Bridge and visit various caves, lagoons and view points to west of the town, entry to which will normally cost a standard of 10,000 Laos kip per location. Among the most popular places to visit are:
