Ubon Ratchathani is located further east than other city in Thailand and has strong links to southern Laos, which is nearby. Ubon Ratchathani is a long way from Bangkok both in terms of distance and in terms of its culture.

Ubon Ratchathani is a busy city, with over 100,000 permanent residents. The city, however, receives relatively few foreign visitors and the facilities catering specifically for foreign visitors are scarce, but there are a few to be found. In terms of both accommodation and somewhere to eat, the Outside Inn is a good option. The best hotel in the city is generally considered to be the Laithong Hotel, which is moderately priced and moderately luxurious.
Most foreign visitors who do come to Ubon Ratchathani are passing through on the way to and from Pakse in southern Laos, which is a transport hub for travel to the 4,000 Islands and the Bolaven Plateau. For onward travel from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok there are direct trains, direct bus services, and low cost domestic flights. For destinations in the south of Thailand you need to travel via Bangkok, and for destinations in the north of Thailand, like Chiang Mai, it’s also generally easier to travel via Bangkok.

The other major reason foreign visitors come to Ubon Ratchathani is for its temples. Four temples in particular are popular. The first two of these temples, Wat Nong Pa Phong and Wat Pah Nanachat, accept foreign visitors for courses in Buddhism and permit some dedicated foreign students of Buddhism to be ordained as monks and live at the temple.
The other two notable temples, Wat Phra That Nong Bua and Wat Sirindhorn Wararam, are notable for their architecture. Wat Phra That Nong Bua resembles the Mahabodhi Temple in India which where the Lord Buddha achieved enlightenment. Wat Sirindhorn Wararam is a more recently constructed temple on a hill top, beautifully designed with a Laos style roof and decorated in elaborate artwork.
