About Travel to Kratie
Like Don Det, Kratie is an inland destination located on the banks of the Mekong River. Kratie is, however, a less popular holiday destination which doesn’t have the same nightlife that attracts large numbers of younger visitors to Don Det.
Kratie Town
Kratie Town, known locally as Krong Kracheh, has a population of around 40,000 and the best facilities for visitors in a remote part of Cambodia located 270 km by road to the north east of Phnom Penh. In terms of comfort, Kratie is the best place to stay whilst exploring this part of the Mekong River.
Kratie has a range of hotels and guesthouses to choose from. The cheapest tourist accommodation costs around $7 USD a night. The most expensive hotel in the town, the Privada Lodge – Historic Hotel, costs around $50 USD a night. For somewhere in between a basic guesthouse and a luxury hotel expect to pay around $25 USD a night.
The range of restaurants in Kratie is more limited. There are a few places, such as The German Restaurant, which serve ‘international cuisine’, however, most of the restaurants specialise in Cambodian dishes such as fish amok. The Street Three Eatery Kratie and Le Tonlé Restaurant and Guesthouse are generally considered to be among the best Cambodian restaurants in Kratie.

Places to Visit and Things to Do
There are no major tourist attractions in Kratie Town itself, although the scenic riverside views are for some reason enough to visit Kratie. Close to Kratie Town, however, there are four destinations and activities which many visitors visit or do:
- Dolphin Watching Tours: One of the best places in the world to see the rare Irrawaddy River Dolphin is the stretch of river near the town of Kampi, which is 16 km by road to the north of Kratie. The cheapest dolphin watching boat tours depart from a pier in Kampi. You can also take boat tours from Kratie Town.
- Phnom Sombok Pagoda: Located 11 km to the north of Kratie Town, Phnom Sombok Pagoda is a small hill top temple with panoramic views across an otherwise very flat landscape.
- Koh Trong: Koh Trong is a large river island which is easy to reach from Kratie Town on a public ferry which completes the journey in 10 minutes. Koh Trong’s rustic fruit farms and river beach are its main attractions. The island is easy to navigate on a bicycle and has some basic guesthouses for overnight visitors.
- Sambour District: Located 40 km by road from Kratie Town, Sambour District is a riverside community which has existed for over 1,000 years. The main visitor attraction in this small riverside town is Wat Sorsor Muoy Roy (Temple with 100 Columns) which houses a display of locally found ancient artefacts.
