Five different areas Bangkok tend to be the most popular places in Bangkok for foreign visitors to book a hotel:

• Lower Sukhumvit Road: The western end of the Sukhumvit Road is one of the most modern and expensive places in Bangkok to stay. The Sukhumvit Road, and the streets leading off the main road, have many 3 to 5 star hotels, restaurants serving international cuisine, and bars. The Sukhumvit Road area also has two of Bangkok’s most notorious adult entertainment zones, Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy.
• Silom Road: The Silom Road and the surrounding area is Bangkok’s financial district. It’s a smart modern area with lots of hotels, shops and some of the best restaurants in Thailand. There are a number of places of interest to visit in this area also including Patpong Night Market, Lumphini Park and the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. Hotels in the Silom Road area tend to be better value for money than those on the Lower Sukhumvit Road.
• Talat Yot: This is the part of Bangkok immediately to the north of Rattankosin Island, where the Grand Palace and Wat Po are located. The best known part of Talat Yot is the Khao San Road. Talat Yot is a very interesting and lively part of Bangkok which offers cheap and simple food and accommodation making it popular with younger visitors. Talat Yot is close to the river, the historic centre of the city, and has several very interesting tourist attractions such as Wat Chana Songkhram and Wat Bowonniwet. The only disadvantage of staying in Talat Yot is that the area is not connected to Bangkok’s modern rapid transport networks, the BTS and the MRT.
• Siam Square: Located 2 km to the west of the Lower Sukhumvit Road, Siam Square is the upmarket retail centre of Bangkok featuring several large shopping centres as well as independent shops. The hotels in this part of the city are relatively expensive and there are few points of interest nearby other than the fantastic shopping opportunities. Many of the restaurants and bars in this area are located within Siam Square’s enormous shopping malls.
• China Town (Samphanthawong): Located immediately to the west of Hua Lamphong Railway Station, China Town is one of the oldest parts of Bangkok and full of character. China Town has some of the most interesting markets in Bangkok, such as Sampeng Lane, and some of the most famous temples, such as Wat Traimit. China Town is also a fantastic place to eat out, particularly at stalls and restaurants on the Yaowarat Road. The disadvantages of staying in this area are that the hotel rooms tend to be small, and the high density of people living in the area and the heavy traffic it can feel oppressive staying there.
