Oudomxay has two bus stations. The Northern Bus Terminal, located in the town centre, has departures to destinations to the north of Oudomxay such as to China and Luang Namtha.
Oudomxay Southern Bus TerminalThe Southern Bus Terminal is located a few kilometres to the South of Oudomxay and is a newer larger station than Oudomxay Northern Bus Terminal with services to destinations to the South such as Luang Prabang, Vientiane and across the border into Thailand.

Oudomxay Southern Bus Terminal is the departure point for lots of different types of passenger vehicle, from converted pick up trucks with two rows of seats for shorter journeys all the way through to large modern buses with fully flat beds known as ‘sleeper buses’. Some the more expensive services feature on board toilets and air-conditioning, others do not. The information you will be offered at the bus station about the type of vehicle will be minimal and you can generally assume that for most journeys the vehicles will be basic large buses or minibuses.

Facilities at the Bus Station
The facilities at Oudomxay Southern Bus Terminal are very basic. The bus station itself has toilets and a large covered seating area and nothing else. On the road which runs around the bus terminal there are three small independent restaurants which serve local cuisine at reasonable prices as well as drinks and snack.
Guesthouse near Oudomxay Southern Bus TerminalOpposite the entrance to the Bus Terminal is the Oudomxay Guesthouse which offers basic clean rooms for 60,000 to 80,000 kip a night. This is a useful place to stay if you arrive late into Oudomxay or you have an early departure. Facilities at the Oudomxay Guesthouse include a 24 hour reception and WiFi in public areas.

For the more infrequent long distance bus journeys, particularly those to Thailand and Vietnam, booking in advance is recommended as these services frequently sell out in advance of the day of travel.
