If you are crossing into Laos via Huai Kon then you need to make your way to Muang Ngeun Bus Station to travel onward in Laos. Long distance bus services do not pick up passengers from the border itself.

About Muang Ngeun Bus Station


You can get to the Huai Kon border with Laos by local minivan services from Nan Bus Terminal in Thailand. Most of the foreign travellers who travel this route from Nan into Laos will go to Muang Ngeun Bus Station, and there aren’t many people foreign or Laotian who travel on this route without their own vehicle. As a consequence the bus station is small with small number of people using it.

There are few bus services operating from this station. Most of the departures are on minivans or half sized buses. The range of destinations is very limited to the few major destinations you can reach directly via the road network. For longer journeys you should go first to Xaraboury or Oudomxay and take another bus or minivan from there.

Facilities at the Bus Station


Muang Ngeun Bus Station has a ticket counter, some seats and no other facilities, not even a toilet for passengers. At the edge of the area around the bus station there, however, some small shops and restaurants and toilet which can use for 2,000 Lao Kip.

Tickets for travel from Muang Ngeun Bus Station are only available for purchase at the bus station.

The prices of tickets are quoted in Lao Kip. There are no exchange bureau or banks between the border and bus station which creates problems for travellers who do not have Lao Kip with them. However, Thai Baht are accepted at the ticket counter, although the exchange given is 250 Lao Kip to 1 Thai Baht which is less than 280 Lao Kip for 1 Thai Baht you get exchanging your money at a bank in Laos.

Bus To Xayaboury


Minivan services from Muang Ngeun Bus Station to Xayaboury depart at 10:30 and cost 90,000 Lao Kip per person. From Xayaboury you can get an onward bus to Luang Prabang (the next day).

Bus To Oudomxay


Minivan services from Muang Ngeun Bus Station to Oudomxay depart at 12:00 and cost 80,000 Lao Kip per person. Oudomxay Bus Station is near Muang Xai, and the connection point for bus services to Luang Namtha and to Kumming in China.
